As part of activities marking the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day, celebrated annually on May 28, the Tabitha-Abimbola Foundation, a nonprofit organisation focused on empowering indigent women and underprivileged children, on Thursday organised its second Menstrual Health Outreach, impacting 250 girls at Immaculate Hearts Comprehensive Senior High School, Maryland, Lagos.
During the outreach, sanitary pads and educational materials were distributed to the students, while health experts sensitised them on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health.
The initiative was aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding menstruation, promoting healthy menstrual hygiene practices, and ensuring that young girls do not miss school because of period poverty, shame, or lack of proper menstrual health education.
Speaking at the event, the founder of the Tabitha-Abimbola Foundation, Abimbola Agbebiyi, emphasised the need to create safe spaces where girls can openly learn about their bodies without fear, shame, or embarrassment.
She said: “As a foundation, we believe every girl deserves dignity, accurate education, and the confidence to understand her body without shame. Conversations around menstruation should be normalised, especially among young girls.”
A major highlight of the outreach was an interactive menstrual health session facilitated by Nurse Lilian Chukwurah of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH. She educated the students on menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, body changes during adolescence, and healthy menstrual practices.
The outreach also featured an identity and self-worth session led by Mrs Ayomide Adeleke, an identity coach who travelled from Ogun State to encourage the girls on confidence, self-esteem, purpose, and embracing their worth.
Educational leaflets containing menstrual hygiene tips and reproductive health information were distributed alongside sanitary pads and other support materials to help the girls better understand and manage their menstrual health.
The Tabitha-Abimbola Foundation appreciated volunteers and partners who contributed to the success of the outreach and reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for adolescent girls, promoting menstrual health awareness, and ensuring that no girl is held back because of her period.
