ABUJA — Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Thursday commended frontline troops of the Nigerian Army for their sacrifices and commitment to national security, describing their dedication as the backbone of the nation’s safety and stability.
The Army Chief stated this during a special Eid al-Kabir luncheon organised for troops of the 8 Division and Sector 2 of Operation Fansan Yamma at the Forward Operating Base, FOB, Tureta, in Sokoto State, as part of activities marking the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
A statement by Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, said the luncheon was organised to boost troops’ morale, strengthen camaraderie and appreciate personnel deployed on the frontlines away from their families in defence of the country.
Represented at the event by the Commander Infantry Corps, Major General Godwin Mutkut, the COAS praised the troops for their discipline, resilience and commitment in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
According to him, the celebration reflected the unity and strong bond within the Nigerian Army family.
“Your dedication and sacrifices remain the backbone of our nation’s security. The luncheon is a reminder that the Nigerian Army stands together, not only in battle but also in celebration,” he said.
The Army Chief reassured Nigerians that the military remained committed to protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and creating a secure environment for economic growth and development.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as strategic guidance and unwavering support to the Nigerian Army and other security agencies.
In his welcome remarks, General Officer Commanding, GOC, 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2 Operation Fansan Yamma, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, said the significance of Eid-el-Kabir aligned closely with the military profession, especially in the areas of sacrifice, obedience and faith.
He commended the troops for their operational achievements against terrorist groups and their prompt responses to communal conflicts within the division’s area of responsibility.
Koughna also thanked the Chief of Army Staff for the continuous provision of combat enablers, timely reinforcements and sustained welfare support for personnel in the field.
He urged the troops to remain steadfast, disciplined and committed to duty in order to justify the confidence reposed in them by Nigerians.
