Seven years of purpose, service, and community impact

By Boluwaji Obahopo

On May 20, Jela’s Development Initiatives (JDI) celebrated seven years of dedicated service, innovation, and community impact; a journey driven by leadership, and sustained by an unwavering belief in the power of people to create change.

Since its official registration as a non-profit organization in 2019, JDI has steadily grown into a multi-sectoral organization implementing practical, people-centered interventions across Nigeria. Yet, the story of JDI began long before its formal establishment.

Humble Beginnings Rooted in Service

Before JDI became an organization, it was a growing movement of action and advocacy led by its Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Angela Omeiza.

Between 2015 and 2019, while working as a broadcast journalist at WE FM 106.3 Abuja, Angela used her platform not only to report stories but to inspire action around pressing community needs.

Through coordinated fundraising and community mobilization efforts, support was raised to provide two boreholes in underserved communities, helping improve access to clean water for residents. During the same period, several blood drives were organized to address urgent shortages in blood supply and support vulnerable patients in need of lifesaving transfusions.

These early interventions highlighted both the scale of social challenges facing many Nigerian communities and the transformative impact that collective action can achieve.

Recognizing the need for a more structured and sustainable approach to development work, JDI was formally established in 2019 with a mission centered on promoting individual wholeness through practical, community-based solutions.

Building Solutions That Matter

Over the past seven years, JDI has implemented innovative programs designed to respond directly to the realities faced by individuals and communities.

One of its flagship interventions, the J Blood Match digital platform, was created to improve access to safe blood by connecting donors with individuals in urgent need of transfusions. The initiative continues to contribute toward addressing one of the country’s critical healthcare gaps and currently has over 900 registered voluntary blood donors on the platform.

JDI has also made significant contributions to mental health awareness and psychosocial support through its Unburden Group Therapy Sessions. These sessions have created safe spaces where individuals can openly discuss emotional struggles, access support, and challenge the stigma surrounding mental health conversations in Nigeria. Through this intervention and related mental health programs, JDI has provided psychosocial support to hundreds of individuals, particularly young people and vulnerable community members navigating emotional and mental health challenges.

The organization has also invested in strengthening the capacity of educators through targeted teacher training programs focused on mental health awareness, learner engagement, classroom management, and effective curriculum delivery. These training sessions have equipped about 500 teachers with practical tools to better support their mental health and those of their students’ while improving learning outcomes within the classroom. By integrating psychosocial understanding into education, JDI continues to promote healthier and more inclusive learning environments.

In the area of disability inclusion, JDI has implemented advocacy and support initiatives in schools including Government Secondary School (GSS) Kwali and GSS Kuje, promoting greater awareness around the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities. Through strategic interventions, stakeholder engagement, and support for students with disabilities, the organization has contributed to creating more inclusive educational spaces while amplifying conversations around accessibility, dignity, and equal opportunity for learners with disabilities. Over 700 students have been reached through diability inclusion interventions in FCT’s secondary schools.

These interventions reflect JDI’s broader commitment to promoting individual wholeness.

In the area of WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), the organization has implemented community-based interventions aimed at improving access to clean water, sanitation, and healthier living conditions for underserved populations.

The organization’s commitment to youth empowerment through volunterring has also remained central to its work. JDI continues to nurture socially conscious young people equipped with the skills and mindset to drive positive change.

Seven Years Later: A Growing Legacy of Impact

As JDI marks its seventh anniversary, the organization reflects not only on programs implemented or milestones achieved, but on lives touched, communities strengthened, and partnerships built over the years.

From classrooms to communities, from mental health support spaces to advocacy platforms, JDI has continued to expand its reach while remaining grounded in its founding philosophy: that lasting change begins with people.

The anniversary also serves as an opportunity to appreciate the volunteers, partners, donors, schools, community leaders, and supporters whose contributions have shaped the organization’s journey.

While celebrating the progress made over the last seven years, JDI remains focused on the future; scaling innovative solutions, strengthening partnerships, and deepening its impact across Nigeria.

For the organization, the journey is far from over.

Rather, seven years marks another milestone in an ongoing commitment to building healthier communities, empowering young leaders, and creating sustainable pathways for development.

As Jela’s Development Initiatives celebrates this important milestone, its story stands as a reminder that meaningful change often begins with a single act of service and grows through courage, collaboration, and a shared commitment to humanity.

Happy 7th Anniversary to Jela’s Development Initiatives.
