PalmPay Young Stars rewards top pupils with scholarships in Lagos

Smiles and excitement filled the air as pupils of Opebi Primary School in Lagos celebrated recognition under the PalmPay Young Stars initiative, a programme aimed at supporting academic excellence in public primary schools.

Among the beneficiaries was Nana Sani, a Primary 4 pupil who emerged as the best-performing student in her school and received a scholarship award.

The recognition marked an emotional milestone for her family, particularly her mother, who has worked to ensure her daughter completes her basic education.

Nana’s story reflects the experience of many families across Nigeria, where children pursue education amid financial and social challenges.

While schooling remains a pathway to a better future, barriers such as limited resources continue to affect access and retention.

PalmPay said it launched the Young Stars initiative to address some of these challenges by recognising high-performing pupils at a critical stage in their academic development.

The programme is designed to celebrate excellence while encouraging ambition, confidence, and sustained commitment to learning.

Through the initiative, 60 outstanding pupils were selected to receive support aimed at helping them remain focused on their education and progress toward improved opportunities.

The need for such interventions remains pressing. According to UNICEF, millions of children in Nigeria are still at risk of missing out on foundational education.

Beyond improving access, stakeholders note that continued support and motivation are essential in keeping pupils engaged in school.

At the presentation ceremonies held at Adeniyi Jones Primary School and St. Peter’s Primary School, the Chief Operating Officer of PalmPay, Mr Samuel Oluyemi, conducted a financial literacy session for the pupils and encouraged them to strive for excellence despite prevailing challenges.

One of the parents of the scholarship recipients, Mrs Abaleke, expressed appreciation for the initiative, saying, “I am happy and I can’t express the amount of joy in my heart. I’m overwhelmed by this opportunity PalmPay has given to my child. I’m grateful to PalmPay for this scholarship, may God reward their efforts with success.”

Also speaking at the event held at Adeniyi Jones Primary School, the Assistant Head Teacher commended the initiative in his opening remarks: “We sincerely appreciate our sponsor (PalmPay), guests, parents, and every individual present here for your support and commitment towards empowering the next generation. To all the beneficiaries, this scholarship is not just financial support, but a motivation to strive for excellence and achieve greater success in life.”

Stakeholders say initiatives such as Young Stars have broader social impact beyond the immediate beneficiaries, as they inspire families, motivate educators, and reinforce the value of education in communities.

PalmPay noted that the programme forms part of its efforts to support education, nurture young talent, and contribute to long-term national development.
