Saudi Arabia says has intercepted three drones from Iraq

Smoke rises from the site of an Israeli airstrike that targeted the southern Lebanese village of Erzay on May 17, 2026. Israel launched a massive series of airstrikes on southern Lebanon on May 17, despite an extension of the truce between the two countries. Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah but the strikes were preceded by an evacuation warning covering nine villages. And the continuing bombardment has only increased scepticism about the truce among the many thousands of Lebanese driven from their homes in the south. Saudi Arabia said Sunday it had intercepted and destroyed three drones that had entered from Iraqi airspace.

Defence ministry spokesman Turki al-Maliki said the drones had entered on Sunday morning and that the ministry “reserves the right to respond at the appropriate time and place”.
