The Nigerian Academy of Science, NAS, is set to make history with the formal opening of Nigeria’s first science-based museum and library, a landmark initiative aimed at transforming science education, research, and public engagement across the country.

The state-of-the-art NAS–T.Y. Danjuma Museum and Library, located in Abuja, will officially open to the public on May 21, 2026, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s scientific and educational advancement.

Commissioned in 2025 by former Defence Minister, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (Rtd.), the facility is designed as a hub for scientific discovery, innovation, and learning, with interactive exhibitions and rich educational resources tailored for students, researchers, educators, and the general public.

In a statement issued by the Academy, NAS described the museum and library as a pioneering platform that would deepen public appreciation of science and strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education in Nigeria.

The statement was jointly signed by the President of NAS, Prof. Abubakar Sambo,and the Academy’s Public Affairs Secretary, Prof. Chinedum Babalola

According to the Academy, the facility will offer permanent and rotating themed exhibitions, hands-on learning opportunities, organized school tours, and collaborative programmes aimed at inspiring creativity and scientific curiosity among young Nigerians.

“The museum and library will provide a dynamic space for interactive exhibitions, scientific learning, and access to a wide range of educational resources,” NAS stated, adding that the project is expected to play a strategic role in national development through science-driven knowledge dissemination.

The Academy further disclosed that bookings would be open for schools, research groups, and institutional visits, creating a platform for experiential learning beyond the classroom.

NAS also called for partnerships with corporate organizations, development agencies, and stakeholders willing to support the sustainability and expansion of the facility.

As part of activities marking the opening ceremony, a public lecture titled: “Redefining Cancer Care in the Era of Immunotherapy and Precision Oncology: Implications for Research, Treatment, and Policy in Nigeria,” will be delivered by renowned cancer expert and Director of the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Professor Kunle Odunsi.

The event will equally feature the induction of seven eminent personalities as Fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Science.
