Miva Open University secures NUC full accreditation for degree programmes

Miva Open University has received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for twelve of its programmes, marking an important step for the institution and for open and distance learning university education in Nigeria.

The accreditation exercise took place between October 15 and November 14, 2025. The outcome was communicated in a formal letter from the NUC dated April 7, 2026 and signed by the Director of Accreditation, Engr. Abraham Chundusu. Following the review, all twelve programmes submitted by the university were granted full accreditation status.

The accredited programmes include BNSc Nursing, BSc Public Health, BSc Accounting, BSc Business Management, BSc Economics, BSc Public Policy & Administration, BSc Computer Science, BSc Cybersecurity, BSc Data Science, BSc Software Engineering, Master of Business Administration (MBA), and Master of Public Administration (MPA).

During the exercise, NUC accreditation teams reviewed the university’s academic structure, course content, teaching approach, and faculty qualifications. According to the commission, the programmes showed strong alignment with quality standards for online and blended learning. The curricula were also found to be consistent with the NUC’s CCMAS framework, and the programmes are supported by qualified academic staff.

Speaking on the development, the Vice-Chancellor of Miva Open University, Prof. Tayo Arulogun, said the outcome goes beyond the university itself and reflects growing confidence in technology-enabled education. He expressed appreciation to the university’s chancellor, members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students for their efforts and support throughout the accreditation process.

Professor Arulogun explained that the accreditation strengthens the value of qualifications earned through the university’s blended and online learning model. According to him, students can now be more confident that their degrees meet recognised national standards and can be used across different professional and academic settings.

He added, “Now, employers will better recognise the quality and industry relevance of Miva programmes, making it easier for graduates to move into skilled roles. In addition, the successful accreditation sends a clear message to regulators and policymakers that open and distance e-learning can provide credible and effective university education when delivered with the right standards and systems in place.”
