Imo: Isu clan cries of marginalisation, demands deputy governorship in 2027

The Isu Clan of Imo State said it has suffered marginalisation in the politics of the state.

Speaking to journalists in Owerri, Friday, the
National President of Isu Clan Consultative Assembly (ICCA), Comrade Stephen Anugwom, noted that the clan comprising more than four local government areas, represents one of the largest, most populous, and politically significant groups.

Anugwom stated that despite the large population of the clan, none of its natives has occupied any key political position in the state.

The clan commended the state governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma for affirming belief in the Imo Charter of Equity, but maintained that the state cannot be talking of equity and yet look the other way while its integral part suffers injustice.

According to the clan, the only way to address the injustice is to allow them produce the next deputy governor of the state and also the senator that will represent Imo West in 2027.

“The Isu Clan, comprising four and a half Local Government Areas— Isu, Nwangele, Njaba, Nkwerre, and half of Orlu LGA— represents one of the largest, most populous, and politically significant groups in Imo State. Based on demographic and territorial influence, the Isu Clan is equivalent to half of Owerri Zone, more than two-thirds of Okigwe Zone and over one-third of the current Orlu Zone.

“Yet, since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1999— a period of 27 consecutive years— the Isu Clan has produced no governor, no deputy governor, no senator, no Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, no Secretary to the State Government, no Attorney General of the State

“This complete exclusion from the key leadership positions within Imo State is not merely an oversight; it is a blatant and unacceptable anomaly. The Isu Clan is currently the most disadvantaged and internally marginalized major clan in Orlu Zone and indeed, in the entire state.

“We demand that the Deputy Governorship position be zoned to the Isu Clan for the 2027 gubernatorial election. This is not a request for preferential treatment; it is a necessary and long-overdue step toward restorative justice and rebuilding confidence in the political system. The Orlu Senatorial position should be zoned to the Isu Clan for the upcoming political cycle”, the clan submitted.
