The National Association of Nigerian Students in Diaspora has called for calm and vigilance among Nigerian students in South Africa following rising tensions and fears of xenophobic attacks.

The group expressed concern over recent developments, warning that the situation could pose risks to foreign nationals, including students pursuing their studies in the country.

In a statement issued on Friday, the President of NANS Diaspora, Comrade Juwon Fayomi, condemned all forms of violence, discrimination and xenophobia.

He stressed that such acts were unacceptable and must be rejected by governments, institutions and individuals alike.

Fayomi noted that every individual, regardless of nationality, deserved to live, study and work in safety and dignity.

He described Nigerian students in South Africa as law-abiding and committed to academic excellence and nation-building, adding that they contribute positively to their host communities.

The student body urged Nigerians in the country to remain calm, vigilant and avoid any form of confrontation.

It also cautioned against inflammatory actions or rhetoric that could escalate tensions, emphasising the need to prioritise personal safety.

“You are ambassadors of Nigeria,” the statement read, urging students to reflect discipline, responsibility and respect for the laws of their host country.

NANS Diaspora further called on South African authorities and security agencies to ensure the protection of all residents, including international students.

It urged decisive action to prevent violence and intimidation, while advocating stronger community dialogue to ease tensions.

The group also appealed to the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa and the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intensify engagement with relevant authorities to safeguard Nigerian citizens.

NANS Diaspora reaffirmed its commitment to peace advocacy and the protection of Nigerian students worldwide.

It added that it would continue to monitor the situation closely and work with stakeholders to ensure the safety and well-being of its members.
