Nollywood actress Juwon Adewunmi has spoken frankly about her intercultural marriage during a recent appearance on the Talk To B podcast, highlighting both the rewards and challenges of marrying outside her cultural background.
Adewunmi, who is based in the United States, revealed that she has been married to a white man since 2019.
“I have been married to a white man since 2019. That’s almost seven years,” she said.
Reflecting on her experience, the actress emphasized the need for patience in intercultural unions.
“Getting married to someone from another part of the world requires patience.Because we are from different parts of the world, we don’t have the same attitudes. We have different cultures.”
She pointed to differences in family values as a major contrast between African and Western societies.
“For us, we honour and care for our parents. For them, they really don’t care—they leave their parents’ house quite early,” she said. “Everything we watch in their movies is just make-believe.”
Adewunmi also admitted that the cultural differences sometimes lead her to question her decision.
“The difference is much. Sometimes I would ask myself, ‘Did I do it?’” she said.
Despite the challenges, the actress maintained that she has long been drawn to interracial relationships.
“I have always loved to be married to a white man,” she said, adding, “They are more caring than our black men. The whites love more than black men. They are crazy lovers—you would love them—but they have their own other sides.”
