The Citizens Alliance for Transparent Leadership (CATL) has responded to remarks by former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, concerning the administration of former President, Goodluck Jonathan.
The group’s reaction follows a statement by Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in which he described Jonathan’s presidency as a “product of inexperience” and linked it to his 2015 electoral loss.
In a statement jointly signed by its Convener, Musa Ibrahim, and Publicity Secretary, Oghenekaro Samuel, CATL disagreed with the characterization, stating that Jonathan’s progression through key public offices reflects substantial governance experience.
“Dr. Jonathan rose through every constitutional rung of leadership—Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice-President, and Acting President during a critical national period,” the group stated, adding that assessments of leadership should consider such experience.
The organisation noted that Jonathan served in multiple capacities before assuming the presidency and said evaluations of past administrations should be based on records and outcomes.
Highlighting Jonathan’s tenure, CATL referenced economic and structural reforms carried out during the period, including the rebasing of the economy, developments in the power sector, and initiatives in agriculture and infrastructure.
The group also pointed to Jonathan’s concession following the 2015 presidential election, describing it as a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic development.
CATL emphasised that differing perspectives on past leadership should be grounded in verifiable information and constructive public discourse.
The exchange reflects ongoing political discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections, with stakeholders offering varying interpretations of previous administrations.
