MAO rejects Yayi’s emergence as APC consensus candidate in Ogun

The Chairman of the Egba Agenda Forum, High Chief Mustapha Abdulakeem Owolabi (MAO), has rejected the emergence of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Owolabi expressed concern over the process that produced the candidate, calling for greater transparency and inclusiveness in the party’s selection procedures.

According to him, while Adeola has been politically active in Ogun State in recent years, the adoption of a consensus candidate should reflect broad-based participation and acceptance among party stakeholders.

“This is not democracy; it is orchestration,” Owolabi said, urging party leaders to ensure that internal processes align with democratic principles.

He emphasized the need to safeguard the integrity of the state’s political space, warning against practices that could limit open competition and participation.

Owolabi also highlighted broader concerns about governance and political development, stressing the importance of strengthening institutions, improving public services, and promoting policies that enhance citizens’ welfare.

He called for political engagement that prioritizes accountability, transparency, and sustainable development, rather than short-term measures.

The Egba Agenda Forum chairman further underscored the role of a vibrant opposition in a democratic system, noting that healthy political competition is essential for accountability and the testing of ideas.

He urged political actors to remain committed to their principles and to contribute meaningfully to democratic growth.

Owolabi concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain actively engaged in the democratic process and to demand higher standards of leadership and governance.
