A non-profit organisation, Glide Foundation, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to issue an unreserved apology to broadcast journalist Seun Okinbaloye over an alleged threat.
In a statement issued on Monday, the foundation described the alleged incident as “reckless and alarming,” saying such rhetoric is dangerous and undermines press freedom.
“It is unacceptable for any public official to resort to threats of violence, particularly against members of the media,” the statement read.
The Glide Foundation emphasised that journalists play a vital role as the fourth estate of the realm and should not be threatened or intimidated for performing their duties.
“Journalism is not a crime, and no journalist should ever be threatened, bullied, or silenced for doing their job,” the group added.
The foundation warned that such conduct could set a dangerous precedent and create an atmosphere where journalists are intimidated into silence.
It further urged relevant authorities to take decisive action to protect the safety of journalists and uphold press freedom.
“We reiterate our demand for an immediate apology. The safety of journalists must be guaranteed, and enough is enough,” the statement concluded.
