ONITSHA – Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has appointed four journalists into the newly reconstituted trans2ition caretaker committee members for the 21 local government areas.

The  journalists are the editor-in-chief of FIDES newspaper, Mr Jude Atupulazi, Emeka Odogwu, The Nation newspaper, Tony Okafor of the Compass newspaper and Chuks Ilozue of Daily Independent newspapers.

Among the appointed 21 transition chairmen, was an immediate past member of the state House of Assembly, Mr Egoyibo Okoye.

Announcing the names of the members of the committee , the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Princess Chinwe Nwaebili urged the chairmen to carry their members along, warning that the House would not hesitate to sack any of them who failed to comply with the directive.

However, a cross section of the people of Anambra yesterday condemned the reconstitution of the transition committee on grounds that it would delay the long awaited conduct of council poll in the state.

One of the stakeholders and chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Prince Chuma  Ojukwu  who spoke to Vanguard described the development as unfortunate, saying that it smacked of insincerity on the part of governor Obi, the lawmakers and the ANSIEC  in their recent assurance that the local government election would be held this year.

“ The people of Anambra state were in fact taken aback yesterday(Tuesday) when the House of Assembly again approved the list of transition members for the 21 local government areas for another 12 months. Less than two weeks ago when the  commissioner in charge of the ANSIEC, Mr Sylvester Okonkwo had announced to the people of the state of his commission preparing  for the council election, the people were happy, the people jubiliated  but with this development, their high spirit has been dampened and it means that we are been fooled”.

Calling on the APGA government to as a matter of urgency conduct local government poll, he cautioned that failure to do that would rob the party electoral fortunes in subsequent elections in the state and that the only way to democratize the local government was to conduct the council poll.
