BENIN CITY — The Edo State Government has called for calm in the ongoing dispute over the Okpella traditional stool, urging all parties to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of legal processes.
A High Court sitting in Fugar, Etsako Central Local Government Area, on Thursday made a ruling concerning the Okpella traditional stool following a suit filed by Lukeman Akemokue.
In response, the state government said it has initiated steps to appeal the judgment and seek a stay of execution.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Hon. Festus Ebea, said the Attorney General of the state has already commenced the legal process.
“While the Attorney General of the state has commenced the process of appeal and stay of execution, we advise all parties to maintain the status quo to avoid any breakdown of law and order,” the statement said.
He warned against any form of self-help, including actions that could disrupt peace in the community, noting that such acts would not be tolerated.
The commissioner emphasised that no individual or group should act outside lawful procedures while the judicial process is ongoing.
He added that security agencies have been placed on alert to ensure peace and stability in the area.
The government also appealed to indigenes and stakeholders in Okpella to remain calm, avoid provocative actions, and allow due process to run its course.
