The Vice Chairman of Oyemekun LCDA, Hon. Oluwadamilare Adeleye, has launched twin initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of elderly residents in Akure, Ondo State.

The programmes, Luckyfọ K’Arúgbó Jẹun and LuckyCare, commenced on March 23, 2026, with a free medical outreach targeting the immediate health needs of senior citizens.

The outreach featured blood pressure checks, malaria tests and diabetes screening, with medical personnel providing consultations and medications at no cost.

Addressing participants, Adeleye described the elderly as the “pillars and living history” of Akure, stressing the need to prioritise their wellbeing.

He said the initiative was a responsibility to ensure that older citizens live healthier and more comfortable lives.

The first day recorded a large turnout, with beneficiaries expressing appreciation for access to medical services many said had long been out of reach.

On the second day, the programme expanded to include food distribution under the Luckyfọ K’Arúgbó Jẹun scheme, attracting over 500 elderly residents.

Dignitaries at the event included Princess Dr Abike Bayo Ilawole, Sheikh Abdulakeem Yayi Akorede, Chief Imam of Akure Kingdom, and the Special Adviser on Agriculture to the Ondo State Governor, Wemimo Akinsola.

Speaking, Akinsola described the initiative as a demonstration of compassion and service, noting that caring for the elderly remained a moral and spiritual duty.

Similarly, Akorede commended Adeleye for what he termed a practical demonstration of leadership, adding that such efforts restore dignity to senior citizens.

He urged other leaders to emulate the initiative for the collective good of society.

A representative of the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, also lauded the programme for its inclusiveness and impact.

In his remarks, Adeleye reiterated his commitment to community development, listing youth-focused initiatives including skills training and technology workshops.

He added that the programme would be expanded across the 18 local government areas of Ondo State to cater for more elderly citizens.

The council vice chairman also announced his intention to contest for the Ondo State House of Assembly, representing Akure South Constituency.

The initiatives, stakeholders said, have continued to provide relief and restore dignity to elderly residents in the state.
