NASS responds to FOI request after lawsuit, withholds key budget details – AdvoKC Foundation

AdvoKC Foundation has said the National Assembly only issued a partial response to its Freedom of Information (FOI) request on budgetary allocation, following legal action at the Federal High Court.

The foundation said this in a statement by its Communications Manager, Luqman Aminu.

The statement said:”In a letter dated March 2, 2026, and signed by the Legal Services Directorate on behalf of the Clerk of the National Assembly, the institution provided limited information on the activities of the Senate for the 2024–2025 legislative year. According to the document, the Senate held 81 plenary sittings and one joint sitting between June 2024 and May 2025.

“The disclosure follows a lawsuit—Suit No: FHC/L/CS/416/26—filed by AdvoKC Foundation, seeking compliance with its FOI request, which demanded detailed information on the National Assembly’s budgets and legislative records.

“Despite the response, key aspects of the request were left unanswered. Notably, the National Assembly did not provide any details on the performance or utilisation of its reported ₦344.85 billion budget, nor did it include legislative data for the House of Representatives.

“We see this partial response as a direct result of legal pressure, but it is far from full compliance.
Accountability is not something institutions can approach selectively. Nigerians deserve to know whether 81 days of sittings justify a ₦344 billion allocation. Providing sitting records while withholding spending details creates the appearance of transparency without the substance.

“Our position remains clear: the public has a right to access complete information on how public funds are allocated and spent,” he said. “Until the National Assembly provides full transparency, this matter remains unresolved.”

The case is currently before the Federal High Court, where the group is seeking an order compelling the National Assembly to release the requested information.”

The statement noted that while the response indicated some requested information is available, the failure to disclose budget performance reports undermines the intent of the FOI Act.
