Lagos State Sports Commission, LSSC, has reiterated commitment to long-term athletic development with the 2026 Swimming Trials.

The LSSC, while officially flagging off the trials scheduled for March 22, 2026, said the event would serve as a high-octane talent pipeline designed to identify and harness the raw energy of young swimmers across the state.

According to the state government, the trials will feature a series of events, including the 100m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 50m butterfly.

Also, to promote team spirit and tactical versatility, the trials also include the 4x50m Mixed Freestyle Relay and the 4x50m Mixed Medley Relay. To ensure a robust developmental pipeline, the Commission has categorised the participants into three age brackets for both male and female categories: 15-16 years, 13-14 years, and 12 years and below.

Speaking ahead of the trials, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, said: “This is not merely a race against the clock; it is a deliberate investment in the discipline, resilience, and future of our youth. Swimming requires an extraordinary level of dedication and mental fortitude. By launching these 2026 trials, we are casting our net wide to discover remarkable talents, ensuring they are nurtured through structured developmental pathways to become true ambassadors of Lagos State on the global stage.”

Fatodu further noted that the progress witnessed in the sports domain of the state is a direct result of the visionary leadership of the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He lauded the Governor for his “steadfast commitment” and for providing an “enabling environment” that has transformed sports from a mere pastime into a viable tool for youth empowerment and social cohesion.

Supporting this vision, the Chairman of the Lagos State Aquatics Association, Mrs Aderoju Ope-Ajayi, highlighted the technical readiness of the association to polish the gems discovered during the trials.

“The sheer volume and quality of talent within Lagos is a validation of the untapped aquatic potential of Lagos,” Ope-Ajayi stated. “Our mandate at the Association is to refine this raw talent into podium-finishing excellence. We are working hand-in-glove with the Sports Commission to ensure our swimmers receive the elite coaching and technical support they need to transition from local contenders to global champions. The foundation has been laid, and the future of Lagos aquatics is incredibly bright.”
