Stakeholders have attributed the works and legacy of Emmanuel Edeh to a life dedicated to education, spirituality and social development.

They spoke ahead of his 50th Priestly Anniversary scheduled for May 19 and 20, 2026.

A member of the Board of Trustees, BoT, of Madonna University, Mr. Rock Adote, said Fr. Edeh, who was ordained on Easter Monday, April 19, 1976, has demonstrated a rare blend of religious devotion and large-scale human capital development that has impacted millions of lives across Nigeria and beyond.

According to him, “The anniversary represents a shift from the traditional role of priesthood, highlighting his transition from the pulpit to building institutions that address critical societal needs.

“Over the decades, Fr. Edeh has established a broad network of educational, medical and religious institutions with footprints extending beyond Nigeria.

“His global relevance was further reinforced in 2020 when the Holy Pope elevated his Pilgrimage Centre to the status of an International Sanctuary, the first in Africa.

“His contributions to education remain particularly significant. In 1999, he founded Madonna University, widely recognised as Nigeria’s first private university, followed by the establishment of Caritas University in 2004. Both institutions have since provided access to quality higher education for thousands of students.”

Adote further noted that beyond academics, Fr. Edeh founded the Pilgrimage Centre of the Holy Spirit in Elele in 1984, which has evolved into a major destination for prayer, healing and reconciliation, attracting visitors from within and outside the country.

“His interventions also cut across healthcare and social welfare, including the establishment of homes for motherless babies and specialised facilities for persons with disabilities, reflecting a holistic approach to development.

“In the intellectual space, Fr. Edeh has contributed to the advancement of African philosophy through his work in Igbo Metaphysics, helping to project indigenous knowledge systems to a global audience.

“He has also ventured into social enterprise, establishing businesses such as a bakery, wine production and water manufacturing outfits, designed to create jobs and sustain his extensive charitable initiatives.

“Fr. Edeh’s contributions have earned both national and international recognition. In 2006, the Mayor of North Miami Beach, Florida, proclaimed September 24 as ‘Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Emmanuel Edeh’s Day’ in honour of his humanitarian impact.

“He was also conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic, OFR, in 2008.”

As he marks five decades in priesthood, stakeholders said his legacy continues to redefine clerical service in Nigeria, with a model that integrates faith, education, healthcare and social empowerment.
