Oyo opens first Osteoporosis centre as experts warn of Nigeria’s growing ageing health crisis

IBADAN — Oyo State has inaugurated its first Centre for Osteoporosis and Bone Health, a specialist facility aimed at addressing the rising incidence of bone-related conditions among older Nigerians.

The centre, located in Ibadan, was launched on Thursday amid growing concerns over the country’s ageing health challenges.

The facility is designed to promote awareness of bone health and provide dedicated treatment for osteoporosis, a condition commonly associated with ageing and increased risk of fractures.

Speaking at the official opening, the Centre’s Chief Executive Officer, Temitope Alonge, said the initiative responds to the specific healthcare needs of elderly people. A former Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital (UCH), Alonge explained that the Centre is equipped with state-of-the-art machinery to deliver specialised care for osteoporosis.

He noted that both affluent and low-income patients would have access to treatment, depending on their financial capacity, and stressed the importance of collaboration with government to expand access to care.

“We are working with the Oyo State Government. Health is a big business, but health is also a social service. There should be a blend of both, achieved through public-private partnerships and insurance schemes,” he said.

Alonge highlighted that while government funding alone cannot solve Nigeria’s health challenges, integrating private sector initiatives with public support can strengthen healthcare delivery.

“During my eight years at UCH, public-private partnerships allowed us to generate revenue while providing essential services. I encourage government at every level to partner with us through sponsorship,” he added.

Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, commended the establishment of the Centre, emphasizing its role in protecting the health of the elderly.

“The Centre is for our health as we grow older. Ageing can lead to softer bones, increasing the risk of fractures. This facility provides specialised care for bone health,” she said.

The inauguration marks a significant step in strengthening Oyo State’s response to age-related bone conditions and promoting awareness of osteoporosis across Nigeria.
