Valentine: Young Nigerians embark on nationwide humanitarian outreach

In a striking departure from traditional Valentine’s Day celebrations, 124 young volunteers across seven states spent February 14 distributing food, drinks, water, and hygiene items to vulnerable people in a growing youth-led initiative called “Sharing Love on the Streets” (SLOTS).

Organised by Feed to Rise Initiatives (formerly SLOTS Humanitarian Initiatives), this seventh edition of the programme raised N2.9 million through 90 public donations and reached beneficiaries in Lagos, Abuja, Nasarawa, Anambra, Edo, Enugu, and Cross River states — a significant expansion from its original two-city launch in Awka and Lagos in 2020.

The outreach reflects a notable shift among Nigerian youth, particularly young women, who comprised 72% of volunteers. Participants included 64 people aged 18–24 and 47 aged 25–29, with backgrounds spanning 44 students, 38 self-employed individuals, and 32 working professionals.

Lagos recorded the highest participation with 43 volunteers, followed by Nasarawa (20), Abuja (19), and Anambra (18), demonstrating the initiative’s broadening appeal beyond its southeastern roots.

“Driven by love, defined by giving — that is what this outreach represents,” said Mmesoma Anita, convener of Feed to Rise Initiatives. “We are young Nigerians who believe true celebration includes loving the forgotten. Their dedication shows that compassion can transform Valentine’s Day into a nationwide day of action.”

Strategic partnerships amplified the impact. Prime Luxury Concierge provided major financial support for the multi-state rollout, while BeamX Solutions, a Lagos-based digital intelligence firm, offered technical assistance and rewarded volunteers with complimentary access to its AI-powered marketing platform, BeamX Luna.

“These young people sacrificed their Valentine’s Day to serve others,” said Obinna Nweke, founder of BeamX Solutions. “Giving them tools to grow their own futures feels like the right way to close the loop.”

Media documentation was handled by videographer Afeso and photographers Maybach/Holarshots, with full volunteer and impact data published transparently on the organisation’s public dashboard.

From a small-scale effort in 2020 to a coordinated national movement, Feed to Rise Initiatives continues to prioritise youth engagement, accountability, and measurable impact. Organisers remain optimistic about further expansion through new partnerships and increased support from individuals, corporates, and philanthropists committed to youth-driven social change.
