Abuja — Former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s immediate past Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has paid tribute to his predecessor, Lt. Gen. Onyeabo Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd), on the occasion of Ihejirika’s 70th birthday.
In a message released on Friday, Buratai described Ihejirika as a distinguished soldier, statesman, and mentor whose leadership helped shape a generation of senior officers in the Nigerian Army.
Buratai noted that his own career progression was significantly influenced by Ihejirika’s command, recalling that early appointments under his leadership — including his first command at Headquarters 2 Brigade and later as Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry — were pivotal in defining his professional trajectory.
“These opportunities were not mere appointments; they were strategic investments in leadership,” Buratai said, adding that the experience prepared him for higher national responsibilities, including his eventual appointment as Chief of Army Staff and later as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin.
He praised Ihejirika’s command style as professional, pragmatic, and mission-driven, noting that the retired officer led by example while providing a clear blueprint for excellence.
“At seventy, General Ihejirika has earned the right to reflect on a legacy secured,” Buratai said, praying for good health, peace, and enduring joy for Ihejirika on the milestone birthday.
Buratai concluded by expressing gratitude for Ihejirika’s mentorship and lasting example, emphasizing the enduring bonds of leadership within the Nigerian Army’s top hierarchy. The tribute was personally signed by Buratai, who described himself as a grateful mentee and successor.
