Benin City, Edo State — The Edo Youth Vanguard has called on the Edo State Commissioner for Education, Hon. Paddy Iyamu, to contest the Edo South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, citing his administrative competence and philanthropic record as key qualifications for higher office.

In a statement issued in Benin City and signed by its President, Osaro Osewingie, and General Secretary, Isoken Kate Ikponmwen, the group described Iyamu as a “tested leader and compassionate public servant” whose track record in governance and community service distinguishes him as a suitable representative for Edo South at the National Assembly.

The group commended Iyamu’s performance as Commissioner for Education under Governor Monday Okpebholo, noting that his tenure has been marked by reforms and strategic interventions aimed at improving learning outcomes and strengthening institutional frameworks across the state.

Iyamu, who was appointed in January 2025 to replace Joan Oviawe, previously served as Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), where he was credited with implementing policies that enhanced basic education delivery.

According to the youth body, his leadership contributed to Edo State’s recognition for excellence in the education sector, with the governor receiving accolades for achievements in educational development.

Beyond public office, the group highlighted Iyamu’s philanthropic initiatives, which they said have impacted thousands of residents across Edo South and beyond. Through his foundation, he has undertaken prison outreach programmes, annual Christmas support for widows, free medical surgeries for indigent citizens, youth empowerment schemes, grants for young entrepreneurs, housing support for vulnerable families, and financial assistance to local non-governmental organisations.

They also noted that he facilitated 800 training slots from Google International, creating opportunities for Edo youths to access the global digital economy.

The group argued that Edo South requires a senator with both administrative experience and a humanitarian disposition, adding that Iyamu’s blend of governance expertise and grassroots engagement positions him to effectively represent the district in the Red Chamber.

They further maintained that his wide acceptance among youths and community stakeholders makes him a formidable prospect for the 2027 senatorial race.

However, sources close to the commissioner indicated that despite mounting pressure, it remains unclear whether Iyamu will join the race, as he is currently focused on advancing the SHINE agenda of the Okpebholo administration.

Observers say the coming months will determine whether the education commissioner heeds the growing calls to seek elective office.
