ENUGU — A non-governmental organisation, Spiritan Self Awareness Initiative (SSAI), has commissioned modern agricultural equipment in Enugu State under the Government of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).
The commissioning took place on Thursday in Adani, with the Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Suzuki Hideo, performing the ceremony. The project targets farmers in Adani and Ogurugu communities, aiming to improve agricultural productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance food security.
Ambassador Hideo explained that the initiative provides modern farming equipment, including combined harvesters and power tillers, to cooperative farmers, enabling them to expand cultivation from one to two hectares and improve operational efficiency.
“We believe this project will help community members build secure and sustainable livelihoods by increasing farming efficiency and boosting farmers’ income,” Hideo said.
He added that the project combines Japanese technology with online training to ensure farmers can safely operate and maintain the equipment, promoting long-term sustainability.
Speaking at the event, SSAI Executive Director, Mr. Emmanuel, said the project would strengthen community resilience and improve agricultural capacity. He noted that the initiative complements other SSAI humanitarian programmes, including a school feeding scheme providing daily meals for over 1,000 children and staff.
“This marks a shift from subsistence farming to cooperative-based agricultural production in Nigeria, supported through Japanese partnership,” Emmanuel said. “The project benefits individual farmers, enhances food security, and creates local employment opportunities. The facilities will be responsibly managed to ensure sustained impact.”
Representing the community, the Atama of Adani, Mr. Anthony Ikwowa, expressed gratitude to Ambassador Hideo and the Japanese government for their support. He noted that the machinery would significantly assist the community, considered the food basket of Enugu State.
