Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has officially launched Taraba Seeds Limited, a company aimed at transforming seed development and distribution to enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen Nigeria’s food security.

The initiative is designed to widen farmers’ access to high-quality, certified, and climate-resilient seeds, positioning Taraba State as an emerging hub for agricultural innovation. The company will serve farmers within the state and across the country.

Founding Chairman, Prasad Karumanchi, said the company would focus on the multiplication, processing, and distribution of improved seed varieties suitable for Nigeria’s diverse agro-ecological zones.

“The company will begin with, but is not limited to, key crops such as rice, maize, cowpea, and sorghum,” Karumanchi said, highlighting the initiative’s adaptability to meet farmers’ evolving needs.

Taraba State Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Nicholas Namessan, noted that the project is expected to generate employment, stimulate agribusiness investments, and boost incomes for smallholder farmers.

Agricultural experts have described the launch as a timely intervention aligned with national efforts to modernize farming practices and increase local food production. By bridging the gap between research institutions and farmers, Taraba Seeds Ltd. aims to accelerate the adoption of improved seed technologies, translating scientific innovations into higher yields and improved livelihoods.

Founder and CEO, Dr. Dileepkumar Guntuku, emphasized the company’s commitment to quality assurance and strategic partnerships.

“We will work closely with research institutions, regulatory agencies, and private sector partners to ensure seed quality, certification, and widespread availability ahead of major planting seasons,” he said.

Hon. Tanko Bobbo, Chairman of the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN), highlighted the yield potential of the seeds, noting that adoption trials recorded 12 tonnes per hectare, describing them as “miracle rice seeds.”

Governor Kefas hailed the launch as a transformative milestone for both Taraba State and Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

“With the launch of Taraba Seeds Ltd., Taraba State is positioning itself at the forefront of Nigeria’s agricultural transformation—laying the groundwork for a seed revolution that promises stronger harvests, improved livelihoods, and greater national food resilience,” he said.

With government backing, private sector leadership, and growing farmer participation, Taraba Seeds Ltd. is set to play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable food production and long-term agricultural prosperity in Nigeria.
