Lagos State has begun relief efforts for residents affected by recent interventions in parts of Makoko, following the state’s enforcement of safety measures near high-risk areas.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the government is rolling out palliatives, relocation assistance, and other targeted support to cushion the impact on affected families.

“You have done wrong, but the government can still show compassion,” the governor noted, emphasizing that enforcement and support can work together.

State officials explained that the relief is focused on households located near high-tension power lines and critical infrastructure. Many of the affected homes housed multiple residents, including children and the elderly.

The support measures include food distribution, relocation stipends, and coordination through local governments and relevant ministries, aimed at ensuring residents’ basic needs are met while longer-term planning is considered.

Sanwo-Olu added that residents had been engaged before the enforcement actions, and stressed that the aim is to improve safety while providing support, not to remove communities entirely.

The government has also directed ministries to document relief efforts and increase communication about ongoing interventions, and has expressed openness to further review and clarification of operational boundaries.

As Lagos balances urban development with community safety, the Makoko operation highlights the state’s efforts to deliver relief and support to vulnerable residents while managing infrastructure risks.
