…Reaffirms commitment to judicial independence in Plateau

Jos – Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has sworn in six newly appointed Judges of the Plateau State High Court, describing the ceremony as a significant step towards strengthening the rule of law and deepening democratic governance in the State.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the New Government House, Jos, Governor Mutfwang said the judiciary remains the last hope of the common citizen, stressing that public confidence in the justice system depends largely on the integrity, independence and competence of those entrusted with judicial authority.

The Governor congratulated the newly appointed Judges who are Justice Andrawus Maikai, Justice Tongret Kparbong, Justice Diane Nkwap, Justice John Mantu, Justice Gavou Bature, and Justice Kingsley Mallan, describing their elevation as a testament to years of dedication, professional excellence and proven integrity.

He noted that their appointments, made following recommendations by the National Judicial Council and in line with constitutional provisions, reflected a transparent and merit-based process.

Governor Mutfwang expressed confidence that the Judges would justify the trust reposed in them at both the Bar and the Bench.

The Governor charged the Judges to discharge their duties without fear or favour, affection or ill will, guided strictly by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and their consciences.

He reminded them that their decisions would have far-reaching implications, shaping lives, resolving disputes and reinforcing public trust in democratic institutions.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to judicial independence, Governor Mutfwang said a strong, impartial and well-supported judiciary is indispensable to peace, security and sustainable development.

He pledged continued efforts to improve judicial infrastructure, enhance welfare and support reforms aimed at improving efficiency and timely delivery of justice, within available resources.

He added that the government had taken concrete steps to address long-standing pension and gratuity backlogs, including the clearance of outstanding gratuity arrears owed to retired Judges, in recognition of their service and right to dignity in retirement.

He concluded by praying for wisdom, strength and sound judgment for the Judges as they assume office in service to Plateau State and the nation.

Responding in behalf of his colleagues, Justice Andrawus Maikai, noted that the elevation is a dream come true and promised they would do their best in the discharge of their duties.
