Amid rising migration pressures and sustained public debate over the “japa” phenomenon, Related Africa Network has launched SPILL Circle, a narrative-driven video podcast examining the social, economic and emotional factors shaping the choices of young Nigerians.

The podcast explores a central question confronting many youths today: Did I make the right choice? Against the backdrop of unemployment, inflation and institutional challenges, SPILL Circle creates a platform where these realities are discussed through lived experiences rather than political rhetoric.

The debut episode features an open conversation between Nigerians in the diaspora and those who have chosen to remain in the country. Participants who migrated abroad cited systemic failures, economic uncertainty and the search for functional structures as major factors influencing their decision. For many of them, leaving Nigeria is framed as a survival strategy rather than an act of disloyalty.

On the other hand, participants who stayed back emphasised national commitment, resilience and the conviction that Nigeria’s future cannot be built from outside its borders alone. Some also highlighted the social costs associated with migration, including discrimination, underemployment and the loss of professional identity in foreign countries.

According to Related Africa Network, SPILL Circle was created to move beyond the hostility and simplistic narratives that often dominate discussions around youth migration on social media. The podcast adopts a non-confrontational format that allows differing perspectives to be expressed respectfully and without sensationalism.

The producers explained that the “IJGB” conversation is only a starting point, noting that future episodes will tackle other sensitive but pressing issues affecting young Nigerians. These discussions will feature diverse voices in what they describe as a shared space for difficult but necessary conversations.

SPILL Circle is currently streaming across various social media platforms and is positioning itself as both a cultural intervention and a living archive of the evolving realities, dilemmas and aspirations of Nigerian youth.
