In a major push to improve infrastructure and stimulate economic activities, the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, in collaboration with the Federal Housing Authority, FHA, and the Festac Town Residents Association, FTRA, has launched the construction and rehabilitation of key roads within the council area.

The Executive Chairman of the council, Mr. Lanre Sanusi, on Tuesday officially commissioned the reconstruction of 2nd, 4th and 7th Avenue roads located along the Mile 2–Badagry Expressway axis of Amuwo-Odofin.

Speaking at the event, Sanusi described the project as a “reality scheme and not a mere formality,” noting that the road works marked a significant milestone in the local government’s sustained efforts to address long-standing infrastructural challenges in the area.

According to him, the approval for the project came after years of engagements and correspondence with the Federal Government, adding that the Lagos State Government is overseeing its implementation.

He explained that the scope of work includes road expansion, installation and reconstruction of streetlights, as well as the provision of a functional drainage system to address flooding and enhance durability of the roads.

“I urge every resident of Amuwo-Odofin to cooperate with the authorities in charge to ensure quick and seamless execution of this project,” Sanusi said.

The council chairman further assured residents that the project would be completed ahead of schedule, stressing the importance of community ownership.

“We plan to finish ahead of schedule with your cooperation. I implore our community leaders to carry their followers along. The government is open to comments and questions so that we can all be on the same page,” he added.

Also speaking, the President of the Residents Association and former adviser to the FTRA in Festac Town, Barrister Muhammed Adegbenro, described the project as a long-awaited breakthrough.

According to him, the road reconstruction had been a struggle for residents for over two decades.
“This is a revolution that our fathers and mothers have fought for over 20 years, and the time has finally come,” Adegbenro said.

He appealed to residents to cooperate fully with contractors handling the project.

“Do not disturb or interrupt the activities of the contractors. If you have any questions or concerns, channel them through the local government, and they will be properly addressed,” he urged.

The traditional ruler of Amuwo-Odofin and Festac Town, Oba Oluwatoyin Adewusi, also lauded the initiative, describing the projects as unforgettable and critical to the development of Festac and the wider Amuwo Kingdom.

“We will never forget this. I thank the local government chairman and the Lagos State Government for repairing a major road in our community to enhance access to trade and enable residents to move freely to their homes,” the monarch said.

Oba Adewusi further called on residents to desist from blocking drainage channels and indiscriminate disposal of waste, stressing that proper maintenance was key to sustaining the benefits of the project.

“It is our responsibility to take care of our roads, avoid littering and keep our drainages free. Blocking drainage causes more problems and forces us to keep begging the government to repair the roads again,” he said.
