Dignitaries from across the country last weekend converged on Umusoko-Awomukwu, Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, as the late Mama Gladys Ubani, mother of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Monday Ubani, was laid to rest.
Among those who paid their last respects were Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti; Senator Austin Akobundu; member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Obi Aguocha, as well as political, religious and community leaders.
Mama Ubani, who died in February 2025 at the age of 90, was described as a woman of discipline, godliness and resilience, whose life left a lasting imprint on her family and community.
In a homily, Rev. Ambel Amadi urged Christians to see death as a transition for those who die in Christ, describing the late nonagenarian’s passing as “a blessed departure” and a life worthy of celebration rather than sorrow.
Speaking shortly after the burial, Dr. Ubani expressed gratitude to God and well-wishers for a peaceful ceremony, describing his late mother as a disciplinarian who instilled in him the dignity of labour, resilience and strong moral values.
“She was kind and loving, but very firm. Her discipline shaped who I am today,” the SAN said, adding that her longevity was sustained by faith and care from family.
Senate President Akpabio described Dr. Ubani as “a brother for life,” urging the children to uphold the values their parents stood for, while Governor Otti said the turnout reflected a life well lived and applauded the deceased for raising children of strong character.
Other speakers, including religious leaders and family members, paid glowing tributes, describing Mama Ubani as a devout Christian and a pillar of strength.
The burial ceremony was marked by prayers, tributes and thanksgiving, as family and friends celebrated the life and legacy of a woman many described as virtuous, disciplined and deeply committed to God.
