ABUJA — Nigeria’s economic planning must move decisively from policy intent to measurable outcomes that directly impact citizens at the grassroots in 2026, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, has said.
Bagudu noted that the coming year would require sharper priorities, stronger coordination and a renewed focus on results that improve livelihoods across states, local governments and communities nationwide.
He made this known at the Top Management Meeting of the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning in Abuja, where he outlined the ministry’s strategic role at the centre of Nigeria’s drive for inclusive growth and long-term economic stability.
According to the minister, the ministry’s mandate to advise, coordinate and guide national development places it at the heart of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the country’s aspiration to build a one trillion-dollar economy.
“As we look towards 2026, our focus must be clear and purposeful. The coming year demands sharper priorities, increased coordination and a renewed emphasis on delivering meaningful results,” Bagudu said.
“We must position this ministry as a forward-thinking institution—one that promotes cohesive planning, anticipates future challenges and translates national aspirations into tangible impact.
“In 2026, our task is straightforward but significant: to move decisively from intention to action and shape a future of shared prosperity for our nation,” he added.
Bagudu stressed that development should not be viewed solely at the national level but must be reflected across states, local governments and wards, where policies intersect most directly with the daily realities of citizens.
“As we pursue national development in the coming year, we are adopting a genuinely inclusive and integrated approach. Development must be evident at the state, local government and ward levels, where policies meet people,” he told management staff.
The minister emphasised that national development becomes meaningful only when states are empowered to grow their economies sustainably, local governments are equipped to deliver essential services, and communities benefit directly from planning and investment.
He added that economic growth must translate into jobs, improved access to basic services and enhanced dignity for citizens, noting that development is successful only when it improves everyday life.
“Our ultimate goal is therefore twofold: to strengthen the nation’s economy and to improve the quality of life of the Nigerian people,” he said.
Bagudu charged staff of the ministry to operate as one institution driven by integrity, discipline and results, warning that policy silos and fragmented approaches undermine effective economic management.
He urged officials to meet public expectations in 2026 with unity of purpose and a firm commitment to national progress, stressing that such an approach is critical to building a resilient, inclusive and prosperous economy for future generations.
