AIM hold inaugural gathering to engage men on positive mental health

Actively Involved Men (AIM), a newly launched men’s community founded by Louis Anani, popularly known as L.A., held its inaugural gathering on Dec. 13, marking both the first edition of “The Unburdening” and the official launch of the movement.
The Unburdening is a facilitated men’s gathering created to offer African men a rare, structured space to remove societal masks and openly express burdens, fears, and frustrations often carried in silence.

The initiative responds to growing concerns around men’s mental health and the emotional isolation produced by rigid expectations of masculinity.
Held in a private, intimate setting, the gathering brought together a small group of men for a 4-5 hour intensive experience focused on emotional honesty, connection, and collective healing. Participants engaged in guided activities designed to move them from surface-level interaction into deeper emotional expression, supported by a trained facilitator.

Unlike conventional discussion forums, The Unburdening emphasizes presence over problem-solving. Participants are not encouraged to give advice or fix one another’s challenges. Instead, the process centers on listening, witnessing, and creating safety through shared vulnerability.
The gathering incorporates both verbal and symbolic exercises, including embodied activities that allow participants to externalize emotional weight, drawing on communal traditions while addressing contemporary realities faced by African men. L,A describes the approach as culturally grounded and deliberately paced to allow trust to develop organically.

AIM’s model is peer-led, with facilitators drawn from the community rather than positioned as distant professionals. According to the organization, this structure fosters relatability and reduces barriers that often prevent men from engaging fully in emotional work.
Beyond the single gathering, The Unburdening includes a 30-day follow-up process designed to help participants integrate insights into daily life, relationships, and family roles. This extended support reflects AIM’s broader mission of promoting emotionally intelligent, actively present manhood.
Actively Involved Men positions itself as a movement aimed at reshaping narratives around African masculinity, encouraging men to be present fathers, supportive partners, and healthy role models for younger generations. The organization’s core values include emotional intelligence, authenticity, responsibility, healing, mentorship, and growth.
With its first gathering completed, AIM signals an intention to continue hosting The Unburdening as an ongoing offering, creating spaces where men can speak honestly, be witnessed without judgment, and begin the work of personal and communal restoration.
