Lagos — Communications strategist and media leader, Nneamaka Okafor, has underscored the critical role of the media as a powerful driver of national development, describing it as an indispensable platform for promoting good governance, accountability, and inclusive growth.
Okafor made this assertion while speaking at a recent forum on media and development, where she emphasized that beyond information dissemination, the media serves as a catalyst for social change by shaping public discourse and influencing policy direction.
According to her, a vibrant and responsible media ecosystem helps bridge the gap between government and citizens by amplifying public concerns, tracking policy implementation, and holding leaders accountable for their actions. She noted that when properly leveraged, the media can inspire civic participation, promote transparency, and strengthen democratic institutions.
“The media has the capacity to mobilize citizens, spotlight development gaps, and project success stories that can be replicated across sectors,” Okafor said. “By telling stories that matter, the media can drive reforms, attract investment, and build public trust.”
She also highlighted the role of strategic communication in development planning, stressing that governments and institutions must engage the media proactively to clearly articulate policies, programmes, and measurable outcomes. According to her, effective communication ensures that development initiatives are understood, owned, and sustained by the people they are meant to serve.
Okafor further called for continuous capacity building for journalists, particularly in areas such as data-driven reporting, digital storytelling, and ethical journalism, to enable the media to respond to the evolving demands of the information age.
She added that in an era of misinformation and declining trust, professionalism and credibility remain the media’s strongest assets. Upholding ethical standards, she said, is essential for maintaining the media’s role as a trusted partner in development.
Okafor concluded by urging stakeholders across government, civil society, and the private sector to invest in the media as a strategic development partner, noting that sustainable progress is best achieved when accurate information, accountability, and citizen engagement work hand in hand.
