Zikky Man: A voice of rhythm, dancehall, and rebirth in reggae music

By Benjamin Njoku

Known on stage as Zikky Man, Isaac Amos Barde is a distinctive voice in Nigeria’s reggae and dancehall scene—an artist whose sound carries depth, heritage, and an unmistakable energy. From the first encounter, Zikky Man’s presence evokes the aura of classic reggae greats, often drawing comparisons to Jamaican icon Sizzla Kalonji. His scintillating vocal texture, vibrant delivery, and magnetic stage energy set him apart as an artist who does not merely perform music but lives it.

Born on 9th May 1975 into the royal family of His Royal Highness Chief Elder Amos Barde (Wakili Ninzom II) of Kafanchan, Kaduna State, Zikky Man’s journey into music began early. At just 13 years old, he joined the Seventh-Day Adventist Church choir, where he received his first formal exposure to music. While still in junior secondary school, he wrote his first song—an early sign of a creative path that would later define his life.

His first major breakthrough came in 1994, when he won the maiden edition of the Musikola ’94 Talent Hunt at Bosan Hotel, Kafanchan, with his original song “Jah Gwan Dash Thunder.” That defining moment marked the official start of a professional music career rooted in authenticity, instinct, and lived experience.

The name “Zikky Man” itself reflects both identity and evolution. Originally inspired by the affectionate way his mother called him—“Aizikki”—he later embraced the name as his artistic identity. To distinguish himself and strengthen the brand, he added “Man,” creating a powerful and memorable stage name that now resonates across reggae and dancehall circles.

Growing up as the son of a retired soldier and a fashion designer, Zikky Man was exposed to diverse cultures across Nigeria. This multicultural upbringing—combined with his Kaduna roots and eastern influence from his mother, who hails from Umuahia, Abia State—has deeply shaped his musical expression. His sound blends reggae and dancehall fusion with a breezy, conscious, and timeless feel.

Beyond music, Zikky Man exemplifies versatility. He is also a web and mobile app developer, programmer, and ICT specialist, seamlessly balancing creativity with technology. This rare blend of artistic passion and technical expertise underscores his multidimensional brand and forward-thinking mindset.

Over the years, Zikky Man has performed on major stages and alongside notable Nigerian artists, earning respect within the industry. His single “You’re My Juliet,” produced by Dave Azi, gained massive local and international airplay, including spins on Unique Vibes Radio UK, and availability across global platforms such as Spotify, iTunes, Boomplay, Shazam, Amazon, and Google Music. In a milestone moment, he released his debut album “The Rebirth” on 10th May 2025, marking his 50th birthday—a symbolic celebration of longevity, growth, and renewal.

Zikky Man’s musical influences span reggae legends and African icons alike, including Sizzla Kalonji, Buju Banton, Tony Rebel, Shabba Ranks, Busy Signal, Ras Kimono, Majek Fashek, Sunny Okosun, Daddy Showkey, African China, and many others. These influences shape a sound that is conscious, energetic, and deeply rooted in African and Caribbean reggae traditions.

His career highlights include performances at the Benson & Hedges Concerts (1995), Star Trek Abuja (2004), and multiple appearances at the Abuja Reggae Festival and Rydeem of Light Gospel Reggae Festival between 2021 and 2024. He has also been featured at tribute events celebrating reggae legends such as Bob Marley, reinforcing his standing within the reggae community.

In addition to live performances, Zikky Man has built a strong media presence as a co-presenter and on-air personality across several Nigerian radio stations, including Kapital FM Abuja, Love FM Abuja, Aso Radio Abuja, and Rockside FM Kafanchan—further amplifying his voice beyond music.

Today, Zikky Man is not only a seasoned performer but a symbol of resilience, cultural fusion, and artistic rebirth. Happily married to Hope Ucha Barde and a proud father of two, David and Deborah, he continues to evolve while staying true to his roots.

With passion, authenticity, and decades of experience, Zikky Man remains a powerful force in reggae and dancehall—an artist whose journey reflects purpose, heritage, and an unwavering commitment to meaningful music.
