ENUGU – ENUGU State Police Command said, weekend, that it killed a suspected member of a notorious armed robbery gang in a gun duel after it foiled an attempt by the gang to rob an old generation bank at Ovoko in Igboeze South Local Government Area, Enugu State.

A policeman on guard at the bank, however, sustained injury in the gun battle.

According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, the robbers attacked the bank at about 5.50pm on Thursday but the policemen on guard engaged them in a severe gun battle which led to the death of one of the armed bandits, while one of the police officers sustained bullet wounds.

He said the wounded police officer identified as Sergeant Ozievie Ayebabogna, was being treated at an undisclosed hospital.

The police spokesman said the Command had already commenced full scale investigations into the attempted bank robbery with a view to apprehending the fleeing members of the gang.

He said: “The Enugu State Police Commissioner, Musa Daura has applauded the gallantry of the policemen on guard duty and at the same time wished the injured cop a quick recovery. He assured that the fleeing robbers must be caught as there was no hiding place for any hoodlum in the state.”
