The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientist of Nigeria (AMLSN), Lagos branch recently elected new executives to run its affairs and promote professionalism in the branch. The election took place at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos during the association’s annual general meeting.

Those elected include Mr. Gbolahun Kabiawu as Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Uba as Vice Chairman, Mrs. Morounke Mannie-udoh as Secretary, Mr. Patrick Otu as Asst. Secretary, Mrs. Olubunmi Salami as Financial Secretary, Mrs. Omotayo Coker as Welfare Officer, Mr. Adeleke Olaoluwa as PRO, Mrs. Olukemi Olusanya as Treasurer, and Mr. Thaddeus Umuna as Auditor.

While the positions of the Chairman and Secretary were contested, other positions remained unopposed.

In a media chart, the newly elected chairman, Mr. Gbolahun Kabiawu said that he aspires to make the association better, as it was necessary to uphold the relevance of the association in the community of health professionals. 

He said, “It is necessary to ensure that health laboratories give quality services while rendering services knowing that we are the searchlight of health in the community. We need to ensure that all laboratories in Lagos state adopt the quality management systems that will ensure that the practice of medical laboratory scientists is of standard and is of good quality. Our mantra is to deliver good Medical Laboratory Services, so as to raise Nigeria from the bottom of the health index rankings. With quality laboratory services, we will help the clinicians and other health practitioners to be able to attend to patients appropriately, and then be able to do justice to healthcare services”.

“We intend to make sure that whatever is coming from the laboratory is standard, wherever an investigation is carried out, whether in the public or in private institution, the ethics of quality is upheld at all time, so that we have quality results all the way.”

Gbolahun said that more goals needed to be achieved in the association noting that the welfare of the members was of topmost priority as their wellness contributed to their capacity in executing duties. 

The newly elected Secretary, Mrs. Morounke Mannie-Udoh, said, “She is ready to serve with excellence as the position demanded her to be responsible and hardworking. My vision is to elevate the value of the Medical Science Laboratory profession by ensuring that its ethics were maintained”. 

Also speaking, the new Vice Chairman, Dr. Benjamin Uba said, “The team of new executives was extensively selected in order to dismiss any issue of imbalance in leadership due to ethnicity and allocation of resources. He noted that the utmost goal of the new leaders is to strengthen the bond of the members in the association.

“We’ve done wide and extensive consultation. We made sure that we are coming on board with a team that will represent the yearning and aspirations of our members.”

He urged the government to support the association with funding and amenities in order to assist its members in delivering services.
