CHAIRMAN of the breakaway All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in Anambra State, Dr. Godson Emebo warned yesterday that unless a fresh congress of the party was held in Anambra State at the ward, local government and state levels, the party should forget winning election in the state because most members in all the 326 wards in the state were disenchanted with the leadership at the three levels.

Emebo, along with some members of the party in Anambra State, recently formed what they called APGA stakeholders forum and said their loyalty would henceforth go to Chief Sylvester Nwobu Alor, Governor Peter Obi’s special adviser on parks and markets who is championing the restructuring of APGA.

In an interview in Awka yesterday, Emebo said most members of the party were no longer committed to the success of the party, adding that it was for that reason that APGA failed to win convincingly during the last national and state assemblies’ election in 2011.

He said: “What we are asking for is a restructuring of the party to make it possible for APGA to win future elections in the state as most of our members have become disenchanted with what is happening in the party.

“The reason we have not been winning elections in the state was due to the frustration of our members who had hoped to vie for party positions at the ward, local government and state levels as it is obvious that those running the party in the state are not active.

“When the people presently posing as executives of the party were handpicked in 2007, the expectation was that congresses would soon follow. But to date, there has not been any congress and this has made our members not to be committed to the party.

“As it is, if the local government elections are held today, APGA will find it difficult in the state because the people at the grass root are not happy. Imagine a situation where people who call themselves ward and state leaders failed to deliver their booths during the last election and they don’t want to give way for others to come in.”

Emebo said that though Governor Obi was desirous to conduct local government elections, having constituted members of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, and providing money for the commission in the budget, the fear of most of our members was that the party is presently not prepared because it is lacking effective leadership at the grass root in the state.
