The Agboyi communities in Kosofe, Lagos State, erupted in joy and disbelief as 267 households received N310,000 each from the Nigerian Red Cross Society in a major humanitarian lifeline that residents described as “the most transparent support they had ever seen.

The cash assistance, distributed on last November, across Agboyi 1, 2 and 3, is part of the second phase of the Red Cross’ Food Security and Livelihood Support Programme, implemented in partnership with the British Red Cross.

Each beneficiary received N250,000 for business support and N60,000 for personal needs, a model the organisation says is designed to help families regain stability while rebuilding their means of livelihood after years of recurrent flooding.

For many residents, the support arrived as a lifeline.

Adenike, a beneficiary from Agboyi 1, fought back tears as she clutched her pre-loaded ATM card. “This is the best humanitarian intervention I have ever seen in my lifetime,” she said. “The selection process was fair, transparent and exactly as they explained from the beginning. I am grateful to the Red Cross and I promise to use this money wisely for my business.”

Her excitement was shared widely across the communities, where the sense of relief was palpable after months of economic hardship and environmental strain.

The breakdown of beneficiaries includes 136 households in Agboyi 1, 70 in Agboyi 2, and 60 in Agboyi 3.
Red Cross volunteers and staff coordinated the distribution, ensuring what residents described as a dignified and respectful process. Officials said the exercise reflects the organisation’s long-term commitment to helping vulnerable communities adapt and recover.

The initiative forms part of a broader resilience and disaster-management programme that has supported families in Agboyi through repeated flooding, loss of livelihoods and rising living costs.

Community leaders said the intervention has not only eased immediate hardship but restored confidence that recovery is possible.

As one resident put it after receiving his card, “Help came when we needed it the most.”
For Agboyi’s flood-battered households, the Red Cross’ support has rekindled hope proving that when compassion is backed by action, communities can rise again.
