As the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) prepares for its crucial election on December 5, 2025, concerns have been raised about the need for transparency in the process.

Critics are calling on the Chief Dr. Emmanuel Ighomena-led Electoral Committee to ensure that all procedures are conducted openly and fairly.

Barely three days to the election, the committee has not yet published the number of accredited delegates expected to vote—a key step in any credible electoral process.

Observers stress that the UPU Constitution clearly stipulates delegate allocations for kingdoms, councils of representatives, the Board of Trustees, branches outside Urhoboland, and diaspora chapters.

Shedrack Onitsha, writing from Afeisere, Ughelli Kingdom in a statement to Vanguard, urged the committee to publish the full delegate list, including representation from the 24 kingdoms, councils, Board of Trustees, and all recognised branches worldwide. He emphasized that clear information on delegates is essential to ensure a credible and inclusive election.

“The UPU election is a family affair, meant to allow members to freely choose leadership for the Nation,” Onitsha wrote. “Transparency and adherence to constitutional provisions are critical to maintaining confidence in the process.”

He also encouraged Urhobo people and diaspora communities to actively participate and support a fair electoral process.
