LAGOS — The Non-Indigenes in Lagos Consultative Forum has called on the Presidency to exercise caution in the reported consideration of social commentator, Mr. Reno Omokri, for an ambassadorial position, citing the need for careful evaluation of all nominees for sensitive diplomatic roles.

In a statement issued by the Lagos State Coordinator, Hon. Steve Oswald, the Forum—representing nearly 40,000 registered members across local governments in Lagos—emphasised that its position is not personal but rooted in what it described as a desire to safeguard Nigeria’s diplomatic reputation and ensure the highest standards in foreign representation.

According to the group, ambassadorial roles require individuals with a well-established record of supporting national interests and presenting a consistent public posture that aligns with the responsibilities of diplomacy.

Need for Diplomatic Consistency

The Forum stated that ambassadors must project stability and clarity when representing Nigeria before foreign governments. It noted that public commentators, by the nature of their work, often express strong opinions, and stressed the importance of ensuring that such opinions do not conflict with the expectations of diplomatic service.

Alignment With Government Objectives

The group said it is essential that individuals appointed to ambassadorial positions demonstrate an ability to fully articulate and support government policies, adding that public records of political commentary should be carefully reviewed in determining suitability.

Public Confidence in Diplomatic Appointments

The Forum highlighted the importance of public trust in the nation’s envoys, noting that ambassadorial nominations should reflect broad confidence and unity, especially when representing Nigeria on the global stage.

Call for Consideration of Alternative Candidates

While acknowledging the prerogative of the President to appoint ambassadors, the group urged the Presidency to consider candidates whose professional and public profiles best align with the demands of diplomatic work.

The statement stressed that the appeal is being made in the interest of maintaining Nigeria’s dignity in international affairs and ensuring that foreign representation reflects national cohesion and credibility.
