Lagos, Nigeria. June 2018 – The convocation hall of Concordia University of Edmonton was filled with excitement and pride as Nigerian scholar Tolulope Mabo was announced the best graduating student of the Master of Information Systems program, earning the highly esteemed Governor General’s Gold Medal Award.
The Governor General’s Gold Medal stands among Canada’s most prestigious academic honours, awarded to graduates with the highest academic standing. Tolulope’s remarkable achievement underscores her academic brilliance, hard work, and dedication to learning.
Beyond maintaining top academic performance, Tolulope distinguished herself through leadership and research. She served as an exceptional ISACA student president and authored a master’s research paper that was published and presented at the renowned World CIST conference in Italy. Her contributions as a Graduate Assistant supporting professors in teaching, grading, and motivating fellow students also earned her special recognition.
Colleagues and faculty members lauded her discipline, resilience, and ability to inspire others, describing her as an outstanding example of academic excellence and integrity.
In her acceptance speech, Tolulope thanked her family, faculty, and friends for their support throughout her academic journey. She noted that the award symbolized collective effort: “This award is not just for me. It represents the encouragement, mentorship, and love I received along the way.”
She offered motivational advice to younger students, reminding them: “There is absolutely nothing you can’t achieve once you set your mind on it and work hard. Mistakes are part of the learning process and your success stories—learn from them! Don’t give up!”
Looking ahead, Tolulope intends to build a successful career in the cybersecurity and audit sector, contributing her expertise to the growing global industry.
Her achievement closed the convocation ceremony on a high note, serving as an inspiring testament to the value of determination and academic excellence.
