Omu laid to rest amid encomiums, eulogies

ASABA – THE remains of erstwhile Military Governor of the defunct South-Eastern State (now Cross Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states) Major Gen Paul Omu (rtd) were weekend, laid to rest amidst encomiums and eulogies.

Omu, a former President General of the Isoko Development Union, IDU, died at the age of 84 and was interred at his home town, Igbide community, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State.

The ceremony had Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former governors, Chief James Ibori, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, former Deputy Governor, Chief Benjamin Elue, Senator Joel Onowakpo-Thomas,Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor,

Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, former Secretary to the State Government, Chief Ovozourie Macaulay, President General of IDU, Prof. Chris Akpotu, top military officers and other notable personalities in attendance.

Speaking at the funeral service held at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Igbide, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu described the late Omu

as an exceptionally well informed Officer who maintained a positive disposition under any circumstances.

Represented by Major General O. D Williams, the Army Chief said Omu was patriotic and left marks of excellence wherever he served.

He said: “As military governor of Cross Rivers State, he (Omu) demonstrated astute and effective leadership traits. He was highly committed and dedicated in the discharge of his assignment.

“In every appointment he held, he demonstrated unwavering determination, diligence and commitment in achieving predetermined objectives.

Reiterating that the late Omu was a brilliant, resourceful and hardworking officer, he said “He was a disciplined, confident and professional officer with impeccable integrity.”

Earlier in his homily, Anglican Archbishop of the Bendel Province, Most Revd Cyril Odutemu said the late Omu lived well and decided to thread on the part of integrity.

Saying that Nigeria was worth dying for, Odutemu said Omu had put his life on the line and was willing to die for Nigeria
