Fulani herdsmen kill village head in Jos

By Taye Obateru
Jos—A village head was, Monday night, shot dead by unknown gunmen at Nangam, Sop District of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State. The gunmen reportedly stormed the village at about 8pm. Other people were said to have been injured.

Member representing Riyom in the House of Assembly, Mr. Daniel Dem, confirmed the killing describing it as unfortunate. He lamented that selective killings targeted at his people had continued for months despite heavy security presence in the area.

The killing came as the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Dipo Ayeni intensified efforts to get the Fulani and Berom in the troubled area to sign a peace deal to end persistent killings in the area.

The peace agreement was supposed to have been concluded early last week, but both sides sought more time for further consultations.

Monday night’s killing, suspected to have been carried by Fulani herdsmen, is being interpreted as a sign that all is not yet well despite the peace talks.
