The Federal Government has approved the appointment of Dr. Wakeel Lawal as the substantive Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos (NOHIL), with effect from November 10, 2025.
The appointment was announced in a statement by Ayo Adenike, Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations, on behalf of the hospital management.
Adenike said Dr. Lawal’s confirmation followed his steady leadership as Acting Medical Director.
“Dr. Lawal has demonstrated exceptional professionalism, vision, and commitment during his tenure in acting capacity. His appointment marks a new phase of growth for the institution,” she said.
Lawal is a medical graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where he obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB). He also holds two Master’s degrees — a Master’s in Orthopaedics from the University of Chester, United Kingdom, and a Master’s in Healthcare Management from the University of Zambia.
He further strengthened his expertise through multiple international certifications in arthroplasty from institutions such as the University of Assiut, Egypt, and Ganga Medical Centre and Hospitals, India.
Speaking on his appointment, Dr. Lawal expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the confidence reposed in him.
“I am honoured by this opportunity to serve. My focus will be on expanding quality care, advancing orthopaedic innovation, and strengthening NOHIL’s role as a national centre of excellence,” he said.
Lawal has served on several strategic committees within the hospital, a background the management said prepared him for the leadership role.
“His administrative experience and clinical depth place him in a strong position to drive reforms and elevate service delivery,” Adenike added.
The management congratulated the new Medical Director and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting him in steering the hospital toward improved patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
