The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed claims that its national convention may be delayed, assuring members and delegates that preparations are on track and the event will proceed as scheduled this weekend.

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard on Thursday, the party’s National Financial Secretary, Daniel Woyengikuro, reaffirmed the PDP’s unity under its recognised leadership, stressing that no internal dissent could derail the convention.

“Who are the members saying it will not hold? Some people who call themselves acting chairmen. Thank God you said they call themselves so. You know the truth,” Woyengikuro said, criticising those questioning the party’s readiness.

He noted that the convention timetable was approved and released by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) during its last meeting, and all subsequent steps have followed the official schedule.

“At the last NEC meeting, the timetable was released for the process leading to the convention, and that process has been ongoing. The convention is this weekend; Saturday and Sunday,” he stated.

Woyengikuro downplayed concerns over internal disagreements, noting that dissenting voices are normal in any large political organisation and do not represent the majority view.

“In a crowd, two or three people may have dissenting opinions. That doesn’t mean anything. Did everybody in Nigeria vote for Tinubu? No. Is Tinubu not the President? Yes,” he said.

The Bayelsa-born PDP chieftain reaffirmed that the party’s leadership remains firmly in control and accused self-styled “acting chairmen” of spreading confusion for attention.

“They call themselves acting chairmen; so what? Don’t we have leadership in the party? Yes, we do, and everyone knows who the leadership is,” he added.

Woyengikuro urged members and delegates to disregard rumours and stand by the party leadership as it finalises preparations for the convention. “Our convention is holding, please,” he declared.
