In an uncommon display of compassion and duty, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Shola Oladele who doubles as the Area Commander of the Sango-Ota Police Area Command, has been widely commended for her swift and humane response to a recent road accident in Ota, Ogun State.
Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around the Onipanu area when a pedestrian attempting to cross the road was struck by a commercial motorcyclist who reportedly fled the scene. The chaotic scene drew the attention of ACP Oladele, who was promptly informed of the accident while on official assignment in the area.
Upon receiving the report, the Area Commander immediately mobilized her officers to convey the injured victim to a nearby hospital. However, upon arrival, delays reportedly ensued over the commencement of treatment for the victim.
In an act many described as “a true reflection of leadership with a human face,” ACP Oladele personally paid for the victim’s prescribed medications to ensure immediate medical attention.
Her intervention not only saved the victim’s life but also earned her commendation from residents and civil society advocates, who hailed her conduct as an example of the compassionate policing Nigeria urgently needs.
“What ACP Oladele did go beyond her call of duty, it shows that policing can be both firm and humane,” said one eyewitness, who preferred not to be named.
Confirming the incident, officers within the command noted that the victim, who had initially been feared dead, is now responding to treatment.
Observers described ACP Oladele’s action as embodying the principles of modern community policing, a model where law enforcement connects with citizens through empathy, promptness, and accountability.
“Her conduct represents the true spirit of public service, authority with a heart,” one senior police official said in reaction to the incident.
As conversations around police reform and humane law enforcement continue across Nigeria, ACP Oladele’s gesture stands out as a reminder that integrity and compassion remain the most powerful tools of public trust.
