The Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria, through its Federal Scholarship Board (FSB), has announced the list of outstanding Nigerian students selected for the Federal Government Scholarship Award—a distinguished national honor recognizing exceptional academic performance, character, and leadership potential.

The 2016 edition of the award attracted thousands of applications from universities across the federation, with only a select group of top-performing scholars emerging successful after a highly competitive screening process. Among the newly announced awardees are Chijioke Nwosu (Medicine and Surgery, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria), Bukunmi Gabriel Odunlami (Electrical Engineering, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta), Charles Idowu (Law, University of Lagos, Nigeria), Maryam Yusuf (Computer Science, University of Ilorin), David Ekanem (Microbiology, University of Nigeria, Nsukka), and Amina Bello (Nursing, Bayero University, Kano)—all recognized for maintaining first-class academic standing and demonstrating exceptional promise in their respective disciplines.
According to the Federal Scholarship Board, the 2016 selection process was highly competitive, with fewer than one percent (1%) of total applicants nationwide earning the award after a rigorous multi-stage evaluation. The process prioritized:
• Academic Excellence: Only candidates with first-class or equivalent distinction in their studies were considered.
• Leadership and Service: Assessment included demonstrated leadership qualities and positive contributions to academic or community development.
• Alignment with National Development Goals: Priority was given to candidates pursuing disciplines critical to Nigeria’s socio-economic and technological advancement.
The Board reaffirmed that the Federal Government Scholarship is one of the most prestigious and selective national honors in the country’s education sector. Administered under the Federal Ministry of Education, the award symbolizes the Government’s highest recognition of intellectual achievement and remains a benchmark for academic distinction and integrity in Nigeria.
Over the years, its alumni have gone on to serve as researchers, policymakers, and innovators contributing significantly to national and global development. Recipients are required to confirm their acceptance of the award through official communication with the Board and may share their achievements publicly as an inspiration to other Nigerian students striving for excellence.
The Federal Government commended the new awardees for their diligence and urged them to sustain their academic commitment as ambassadors of Nigeria’s future.
