Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, has been honoured with the Global Sustainable Leadership Award at the Global Sustainable Education and Leadership (G-SEL) Conference 2025, held at the House of Lords, Palace of Westminster, United Kingdom.
The two-day conference brought together senior policymakers, business leaders, and diplomats to discuss innovation, sustainability, and expanding equitable energy access. Komolafe was recognised for his leadership in implementing reforms under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and strengthening Nigeria’s position as a transparent and competitive hub for energy investment.
Since assuming office, Komolafe has overseen a significant transformation in Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector. Active rig count increased from eight in 2021 to 69 as of October 2025, reflecting growth of more than 760 percent. The Commission also recorded improved revenue performance, surpassing federal targets with surpluses of 18.3 percent in 2022, 14.6 percent in 2023, and 84.2 percent in 2024.
NUPRC has also expanded opportunities for indigenous companies, which now account for over 30 percent of Nigeria’s oil production. The implementation of Host Community Development Trusts has directed increased benefits from oil and gas operations to local communities, supporting infrastructure, social welfare, and peacebuilding efforts in producing areas.
In his remarks, Komolafe dedicated the award to Nigerians, describing it as recognition of the country’s resilience and the government’s commitment to reform. He stated that the Commission’s priorities remain transparency, competitiveness, and sustainability, aimed at maximising the value of Nigeria’s hydrocarbon resources while advancing the global energy transition.
“We are building a transparent and investment-friendly regulatory environment that reflects our national values and global aspirations,” he said. “Nigeria is shaping the future of energy in Africa as a reliable supplier, a fair regulator, and a responsible global partner.”
Other recipients of the Global Sustainable Leadership Award included Angela Wilkinson, Chief Executive Officer of the World Energy Council; Jason Jackson, Mayor of Islington; Riad Meddeb of the United Nations Development Programme; and Ben Parsons, Partner at Oakin Energy Transition Strategy. Several senior government officials and diplomats from across Africa also received honours for contributions to sustainable development and equitable energy access.
