The Sandcastle and the Lesson Learned — Anti-bullying tale told through the eyes of a 9-year-old

In an era where bullying remains a persistent challenge in schools across Nigeria, a remarkable voice has emerged, not from an adult expert or seasoned writer, but from a nine-year-old child determined to spark change.

The Sandcastle and the Lesson Learned, authored by Samuel Fayemi, stands as an inspiring literary effort that not only reflects a child’s sensitivity to societal issues, but also reinforces the power of storytelling in shaping young minds.

The book, centred on a boy who finds the courage to stand up to a bully, provides young readers with practical guidance on navigating bullying while emphasising emotional resilience, kindness and the importance of speaking up. Samuel draws from experiences in his former school where he witnessed bullying firsthand, a moment that ignited his desire to write a story that could help peers facing similar struggles.

“Young people who are bullied sometimes don’t know what to do,” the young author explained. “I wrote this book to teach them that it is good to tell a trusted adult. No human is too small to do things very big.”

Though simple in structure, the narrative carries emotional intensity. The symbolism behind the sandcastle, something precious yet fragile, beautifully represents the human heart: easily hurt, yet capable of healing and rebuilding stronger. This metaphor elevates the book beyond a children’s story into a message of empathy and growth.

The author’s mother, Mrs Solape Fayemi, said she initially underestimated the seriousness of her son’s ambition until his persistence revealed the depth of his vision. She support and belief in a child’s dream.

“Bullying affects about 70% of children in Nigeria,” she noted. “This book encourages children to speak up and adults to listen. We must not bully children into silence.”

The book’s publisher, Mr Ekhahuere Dickson of Trispect Solutions, described the work as simple but profound, praising Samuel’s creativity, intelligence and thematic clarity. According to him, the story’s strength lies in its ability to teach strong values through relatable, everyday playground scenes.

The Sandcastle and the Lesson Learned succeeds in its mission. It is not merely a story; it is a social tool aimed at empowering children and reinforcing the roles of parents, teachers and caregivers in addressing bullying. Its language is accessible, its message clear, and its emotional tone genuine and compassionate.

While the narrative is brief and straightforward, what it lacks in complexity, it gains in sincerity and purpose. For younger readers, simplicity is a strength, making the lessons easy to understand and apply.

This book marks a significant milestone, not just for a young author, but for conversations on child safety, emotional intelligence and courage in Nigerian schools. It is a commendable contribution and a recommended read for pupils, parents, teachers and school counsellors.

Samuel Fayemi’s work reminds the nation that children, too, have a voice, one capable of advocating change, dignity and kindness.

If this debut is a glimpse into his future literary potential, then Nigeria may just be witnessing the rise of a remarkable young storyteller with a mission to influence hearts and transform childhood experiences for the better.
