A Nigerian-born researcher from Okposi, Ohauzara LGA of Ebonyi State and doctoral candidate at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing, Chisom O. Odii, is attracting attention in global academic circles for his innovative work addressing health disparities and cancer symptom science.

Odii, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Nigerian premier private university, Igbinedion University Okada, and is pursuing a PhD at UAB, is deeply committed to advancing research that promotes equitable healthcare delivery. His studies focus on exploring how social determinants of health and systemic inequalities shape cancer treatment outcomes and patient experiences, particularly among underserved populations.
Currently serving as a Graduate Research and Teaching Assistant at UAB, Odii has published multiple peer-reviewed papers in oncology and pain management. His research delves into complex issues such as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, opioid prescribing patterns, and the influence of social and behavioral factors on patient recovery.
Speaking on his motivation, Odii said:
“My goal is to ensure that science not only informs treatment but also improves access and fairness in healthcare delivery. Health equity is not just a topic of research it’s a moral and social responsibility.”
Odii’s work has earned significant recognition. He is a recipient of the UAB Blazer Graduate Research Fellowship and the UAB School of Nursing Core Value Award, an honor voted by peers for leadership and academic excellence. In 2024, he won a Bronze Medal at the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) 3-Minute Thesis Competition for effectively communicating his research to a broad non-expert audience.
His collaborative efforts extend across multiple disciplines, resulting in co-authored publications in leading journals such as Gynecologic Oncology Reports, Cancer Nursing, and Pain Management Nursing. His studies have also been presented at major international forums, including the Oncology Nursing Society Annual Congress and the Doctoral Canadian Nursing Network International Conference.
With active global nursing licensure in multiple countriesboth Nigeria and the United Kingdom, Odii brings a unique cross-continental perspective to his academic and clinical work. His background includes experience in anesthetic and perioperative nursing at major hospitals in both Nigeria and United Kingdomcountries, as well as certifications in clinical research, clinical governance, and advanced life support healthcare leadership.
Beyond research, Odii plays an active role in the academic community as a mentor, peer reviewer, and advocate for student development. He continues to investigate how behavioral and structural factors influence public health and patient outcomes.
Reflecting on his vision for the future, he noted:
“I believe the future of healthcare depends on our ability to merge compassion with innovation. Through research and collaboration, we can build systems that serve everyone regardless of geography or background.”
